ABSTRACT

THE ROLE OF INVESTMENT ADVISORS IN PORTFOLIO PERFORMANCE

This study investigates the role of investment advisors in portfolio performance with objectives: (1) to assess the impact of advisory services on investment outcomes; (2) to identify the key factors influencing advisor effectiveness; (3) to understand the challenges in the advisor-client relationship. A survey design is used to collect quantitative data. Taro Yamane's formula is applied to derive a sample size of 300 respondents from Lagos, representing a mix of retail and institutional investors. An investment advisory firm is chosen as the case study due to its comprehensive advisory services. The reliability coefficient score for the survey instrument is 0.87. Findings indicate that investment advisors significantly enhance portfolio performance through personalized advice, risk management, and strategic planning. However, challenges include aligning advisor recommendations with client goals and managing conflicts of interest. It is recommended that investors seek professional advisory services, clearly communicate their investment objectives, and regularly review advisor performance to optimize investment outcomes.
